SAN JOSE, CA. –January 21, 2009 – Airtronics Metal Products, Inc., a premier Silicon Valley custom sheet metal engineering, design and manufacturing company, has established an educational outreach program with San Jose State University to help Mechanical Engineering students gain knowledge about the technology of sheet metal fabrication. The program includes both in-classroom instruction and on-site tours at Airtronics’ manufacturing plant to help provide students with a “real-world” perspective for developing products and housings fabricated from sheet metal. In addition, an engineering project is planned for early 2009 and Airtronics plans to offer select internships for eligible students.

Such a sourcing decision is mainly driven by cost considerations, especially if the project/program has monthly volumes in excess of 2,500 units. The OEM can elect to establish the source in-house, or have a Contract Manufacturer (ie. Solectron, Tyco, Sanmina, etc.) handle this for them. However, these “Chinese solutions” have several potential drawbacks that need to be overcome.
